Gifts from Christ - Talk on Dec 27, 2009

Good morning brothers and sisters. My name is Carrie Wang and I’m in 25th ward. I’m from Taiwan actually and it is my second time to give a talk in English, so I will speak a little bit slow. Uhhh….If you fall asleep, I can totally understand, so don’t worry.

In the Christmas season, we get a lot of gifts, sometimes we won’t get what we want or what we expect, but luckily we can return them. However, gifts from Christ are priceless and He knows each of us and He knows what we need.

He gave us his life as the perfect example, so we can pattern our lives after Him. Not only did he give us the perfect example, but he suffered for us to bring us the blessing of the Atonement and the Resurrection. In D&C 19:16-19,
16 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent;
17 But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I;
18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—
19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.

President Ezra Taft Benson said, “Some men are willing to die for their faith but will not fully live for it. Christ both lived and died for us. By walking in his steps and through his atonement we can gain the greatest gift of all--eternal life--which is that kind of life of the great Eternal One, our Father in heaven.”

In 3 Nephi 27:27,
And know ye that ye shall be judges of this people, according to the judgment which I shall give unto you, which shall be just. Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am.

President Benson also said, “That man is greatest and most blessed and joyful whose life most closely fits the pattern of the Christ. This has nothing to do with earthly wealth, power, or prestige. The only true test of greatness, blessedness, joyfulness is how close a life can come to being like the Master, Jesus Christ. He is the right way, the full truth, and the abundant life.”

Christ gave us a prophet. Although we can communicate with our Heavenly Father through prayers, there are some instructions from Him we can only receive through the prophet. Prophet can guide us and prevent us from going to the wrong direction so it is important to listen to the prophet. The most important prophet is the one who is living in our day and age. This is the prophet who has today's instructions from God to us. That’s why it’s essential that we have access to and carefully read and ponder his words in Church magazines.

Christ gave us His church. The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints is the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth. There is no salvation nor exaltation for us outside of the Church. Through it we receive baptism, priesthood, celestial marriage, and other sealing powers. Quote from President Benson, “We must work with it and in it, build it up and move it forward. We should be willing to give generously of our time, talents, and means for the Church. No matter what happens to the world, the Church will grow in strength and will be intact when the Lord comes again.”

Christ Gave Us the Scriptures –particularly the Book of Mormon. The Prophet Joseph Smith referred the Book of Mormon as the most correct book, and he also called it the keystone of our religion. He said that "a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book".

I know this church is true. I know God loves us, he's watching us, he wants us to succeed, and we'll know someday that he hasn’t left one thing undone for the eternal good of each of us. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

I was all mad when I needed some help from people I helped always for my final project. It was something like feedback on my website, not even ask them to help me CREATE anything.
I don't mind helping people and I know it's kinda weird to ask them to return the favor because we don't help people just because we want something from them. An old saying, "A friend in need is a friend indeed." This is sooooooooo true. And about my title, I speak Mandarin, English, and German. Most friends of mine know Mandarin and English, but when I want to say something bad but not very bad, you know? I can use German.....well...I know exactly that Heavenly Father definitely knows what I was saying.....but I was really really angry....I guess I need to repent before going to the bed....

Don't get me wrong. I'm active. :) But this semester, I start to try to do so many things that I wouldn't do before.
1. I attend Logan Institute Technology Committee (you can tell how I love technology).
Finally got involved!

2. No more run-away happens on Sunday means attend 3 hrs church meeting EVERY Sunday! great progress for me, cuz I used to attend only 1 hr for most of time. For some reason, I didn't know anybody in my previous ward.... and of course I know I should go to church for my own purpose, but it was hard for an international to do that.....those who weren't in another countries sitting in the chapel by themselves without knowing anyone there cannot judge me on this. :)

3. Visiting Teaching

So I'm still waiting for the result from the internship.
It started from July 3, I got an email from the protential employer asking me if I am interested in interviewing for the instructional designer intern. Of course, I have huge interests in that. Two weeks after, July 20, they called me to make everything was alright that I can work full time in Fall semester. July 27, they called me again and kinda offered me that position before I go to interview - means I haven't got interview yet now. But I'm still not sure if they are going to offer me that job for real or not (they sound like they did cuz they told me a lot of things like pay rate, and also asking me for the I-20 and some other documents because of my international student status. So they said they were gonna call me soon, today, July 30, heard from them because I emailed HR yeterday about the procedure to work legally here in the states with my student status. Then, HR emailed me today and told me they are still working on some internal matters, and they will get back to me by the first of next week.
oh boy, I think my life is just like the roller coaster. I thought I would be able to work as an intern in one of my dream companies, but then, I have to worry about if they can offer me that job.... :(

well, guess the only thing I can do right now is pray and wait.....

Adversity

Just got 利阿賀拿 today and read it while I was uploading videos. I always love Elder David A. Bednar's talk because his talk always gives me answer. But this time, I want to talk about President Henry B. Eyring's talk in 179th GC.

No matter how good we live in our life, there must be some period of time that we need to face failure or other chanllenge. No one can always get what they want, no one can always succeed. I have been wondering, "Why bad things always happen to good people?", "Why me?". These kinds of sentences are just like endless questions pop up in my mind. Sometimes, it will just make people to lose their faith and think He doesn't love us at all because we see too many things which happened in a wrong way.

But is that really a wrong way just like we thought? President Eyring said, "The very opportunity for us to face adversity and affliction is part of the evidence of Their infinite love." Sounds incredible, huh? What does that mean if They love us, they still want us to face adversity? Are They supposed to give us super nice stuff so that we can live happily ever after?

So President Eyring said, "It is clear that for us to have that gift and to be given that trust, we must be transformed through making righteous choices where that is hard to do. We are prepared for so great a trust by passing through trying and testing experiences in mortality. That education can come only as we are subject to trials while serving God and others for Him."

He continued, "In this education we experience misery and happiness, sickness and health, the sadness from sin and the joy of forgiveness. That forgiveness can come only through the infinite Atonement of the Savior, which He worked out through pain we could not bear and which we can only faintly comprehend."

Having faith is a good thing to do, though it's just somehow hard for me in some specific time (So I guess I have the second thing I want besides patience - faith). Having faith when you fail is just even harder than having faith when you can succeed at everything.

But well...to sum up, we just need to work on what we are supposed to do, being patient, pray about it, and have faith in Him, and then He will comfort us no matter how hard we've lived.:)

Patience

There are tons of things I don’t have and I want them so bad. One of them is patience. I always want things work out right away, I am afraid of waiting. I’m afraid that if things won’t work out right now, then they won’t work out later.

Some of my friends (well…I guess all of them) have told me I need to be patient. Otherwise, I will just push some people too hard. I have to admit that I realized that long time ago but I’ve always thought that it might just work for some people. Then, I just keep being impatient. Sometimes I would wonder why good things didn’t happen to me first. I would complain to my friends and asked them why. Of course, they wouldn’t have answer for me because only He knows everything.

So when I read scriptures, I found one really inspires me, “For we are saved by hope; but hope that is seen is not hope; for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it” (Romans 8: 24, 25)

Being patient, for me, might still be a long way to go, but I’m learning. Therefore, for those who got annoyed because of my impatience, I have to say sorry to you and still thank you for your support to be my friends. :)

Spending these two years without you, life sometimes became pointless. When I was bewildered, you were not there for me to find the answer.
The most regretful thing I've done is being mad at you because of a little joke you made on me and I couldn't say, "Sorry, I didn't mean to be like that." in person.
過著兩年沒有你的日子，有時候生活得無意義。當我困惑時，我沒辦法從你那邊找到答案。

When I first heard about the news, I simply thought you would be fine again because I know you were just too awesome and He wouldn't take you away from us.
當我第一次聽到這個消息，我只是單純地想你會再好起來。因為你是一個非常棒的人，祂不會就這樣把你帶走。

It was lung cancer. After staying in the hospital for a week, the doctor said you could come home. Grandma was so happy and she went to do her hair just for you even if she couldn't really see what it looked like. But at that night, the day you came home, you went back to the hospital again.
診斷出是肺癌。在醫院待了一星期後，醫生說你可以回家了。奶奶她好高興，還特地去做了頭髮就算她其實也看不太見頭髮做好後的樣子。但在你回家那天的晚上，你又回去了醫院。

4 days after you went back to the hospital, it was the time when our school doing the finals. I told mom I would go to see you again after I finished proctoring those college kids doing their finals. It was a long Wednesday, not like usual, I needed to proctor till 7pm. After everything was done, I called mom and told her I was coming. She didn't say anything to me though just told me she would see me there.

Preparation (speak on Sunday, March 22, 2009)

Good morning everyone. For those who don’t know me, my name is Carrie Wang. I’m from Taiwan and I’ve been here for like 8 or 9 months and I major in Instructional Technology at Utah State. Well…it’s my first time to give a talk in English so it will be kinda in a very slow pace. So if you fall asleep, it’s totally ok!

So during spring break, I’ve been thinking about what topic I should pick. But you know, there was still another week for me after spring break. So I was like kinda lazy to pick topic since I thought I still had a lot of time. But then spring break was over, and 4 days passed. On Friday night, I started to be so nervous because I figured out I haven’t picked any topic yet. Then the next second, the topic came to my mind because that’s what I was supposed to do for this talk – preparation.

So I guess people have had a moment that not being prepared well to do some certain things. At least I did have these moments.

Last semester, one of my classes required read some articles every week. The teacher will ask us to post our questions by raising our hands in class. For one week, I didn't do the required reading and I totally thought it was no big deal because I knew the teacher wouldn't ask me any questions in class. But then, in that week, our teacher changed his mind to do some class activities. He formed us into some groups, and we had to discuss the articles with classmates. So in my group, I was seriously hoping my classmates wouldn't ask me any questions. But I always have bad luck when I'm not prepared. So my classmate eventually asked me, "So Carrie, what do you think about those theories?" I was like, "ahhh.....they are all good....?"
It was embarrassing that I couldn't answer the question.

But those seem like some small things, the more important thing is: Do we prepare for ourselves well enough to go back to our Lord?

I still remember when I took institute class in Taiwan. Our institute teacher once asked us in class: If Jesus Christ is coming tomorrow, are you prepared enough to stand in front of Him? No one in class could really say he or she is ready. So I really appreciate she inspired me that we need to prepare for ourselves all the time and do not procrastinate to repent.

In 177th Annual General Conference, elder David A. Bednar used cucumber and pickle as an example of preparation, I'd like to quote some of his speak.
He said, "Just as a cucumber must be prepared and cleaned before it can be changed into a pickle, so you and I can be prepared with "the words of faith and of good doctrine" (1 Timothy 4:6) and initially cleansed through the ordinances and covenants administered by the authority of the Aaronic Priesthood." And he also said, "ust as a cucumber is transformed into a pickle as it is immersed in and saturated with salt brine, so you and I are born again as we are absorbed by and in the gospel of Jesus Christ. As we honor and "observe the covenants" (D&C 42:13) into which we have entered, as we "feast upon the words of Christ" (2 Nephi 32:3), as we "pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart" (Moroni 7:48), and as we "serve [God] with all [of our] heart, might, mind and strength." There is another quote from Elder Bednar. He said, "after we come out of the waters of baptism, our souls need to be continuously immersed in and saturated with the truth and the light of the Savior's gospel. Sporadic and shallow dipping in the doctrine of Christ and partial participation in His restored Church cannot produce the spiritual transformation that enables us to walk in a newness of life. Rather, fidelity to covenants, constancy of commitment, and offering our whole soul unto God are required if we are to receive the blessings of eternity."
I really love how elder Bednar suggested us, because of his words, I can ponder what I've done and what I haven't done to be prepared in this life.

I'd like to close my speak with 2 verses scriptures, they are in Alma 34:32, 33 -
"For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors." (Alma 34:32)
"And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed." (Alma 34:33)

I know this church is true. I'm so grateful that I was able to inspried by Holly Spirit 2 and half years ago to join this church. I'm so gradeful that I have a wonderful family who support me all my church activities even if they are not members. I hope I can help them to be prepared one day so we can live together enternally. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

I spent my birthday in Taiwan, but my birthday was sabbath day so we actually couldn't go out to eat. It turned out that I cooked for bunch of people there, from meal to dessert...and what the heck was that? But then I found I'm so good at cooking. hahaha

The day before my birthday, I ate with my family at steak house. I love my dad that every time when he eats at this steak house, he will talk a lot of random things of food there. My mom showed me her latest camera and made me so jealous. My sister was in super hot outfit and sometimes makes me wonder if she is my sister....but anyways...I love them!

沒有洗碗機你可以過活嗎? Can you live without dishwasher?

這裡的人沒有洗碗機可以過活嗎? 我很懷疑。也許這只是因人而異，但起碼我知道我的室友不行。我跟3個美國女生住，他們大概19、20歲。
請看照片，兩個洗碗槽裝滿了碗盤 (星期一到星期三而已)。我覺得這很好笑，所以我就照了照片。
現在的年輕女生都變成了邋遢鬼嗎?

Can people here live without dishwasher? I doubt. Or maybe depends on each person. But at least I know my roommates can't live without dishwasher. Oh well...I live with 3 American girls who are 19, 20 years old.
Look at the pic, two sinks were filled with tons of dishes. (just from Mon to Wed). I thought it was so funny, so I took the pic.

玉米田迷宮 Corn Maze

剛剛去玉米田迷宮回來，真是還不錯玩。
一開始被嚇的要命，後來習慣後就ok了，還反過來問裝鬼嚇人的人可不可以再表演一次。
我想他們應該很沮喪....因為嚇不倒人。

In the beginning, I was scared to death, but after I got used to that, I even asked those people who pretended to be ghost if they could perform again.
I think they would be so depressed.....cuz they couldn't frighten people..

沒錯，國慶日的後一天，Logan Utah, 下雪了。不過只維持了5分鐘左右。現在，又是陽光普照。

Yes, one day after 10/10 day, It snowed in Logan, Utah. But it only lasted for 5mins. And now, here is sunshine again.

來到美國算一算也有5個月了，時間過得真快 ...
什麼都沒變，變的是需要每天自己下廚，竟然發現，原來我是天才小廚師。

It has been 5 months since I came to the sates, time flew...
There is nothing changed for me, the only thing I changed is I have to cook everyday. And then suddenly I found that.. I'm so good at cooking. :)
